Many Arabs would prefer death to ‘liberation’ by the U.S.
Arabs are divided over the spate of popular revolutions rocking their regimes. But it is clear that many of them will prefer to be crushed under the armored vehicles of their regimes than being ‘liberated’ by the U.S.
The results of ‘U.S.-type-liberation’ are still there for the Arabs to learn from, particularly in Iraq.
U.S. ‘liberation’ of Iraq has brought horrendous results and led to ruinous consequences. Its outcome has been corrupt local administrations (governments) immersed in filthy sectarianism.
One can hear slogans being voiced on the streets of several Arab cities and capitals. Throngs of people shout at the top of their voices: “Death is better than life on an American plate.”
This is a very bad conclusion for the world’s superpower and its standing in the Arab world. Nonetheless, it is the reality which Washington has ignored and replaced by the language of force and dealings with the ruling classes in the region.
This, however, should not mean that a superpower like the U.S. does not understand its interests more than the masses and their shouts on Arab streets.
No shouts or slogans have ever toppled an Arab ruler without international interests taken into account.
But one outcome of the popular uprisings in the Arab world is clear.
The calculations and balances of power are changing very quickly in the Middle East. Today, U.S.’s and Israel’s pleasure or displeasure is no longer a benchmark.
Even the two countries have shifted their goal posts. Loss and win are being measured differently by them.
As we a enter the Middle East’s scorching summer, conditions in the Arab world do not point towards tranquility. It is going to be an unprecedented summer whose events will have far-reaching consequences on many seasons to come.
