TEHRAN-E EMROOZ
in a news analysis says Iran has only several hours to introduce a representative to participate in the 159th OPEC meeting in Vienna on June 8 and it is Iran’s last opportunity to retain the presidency of OPEC. (Iran officially took over the presidency of OPEC for the first time in 36 years on January 2011 and the country's former Oil Minister Masoud Mirkazemi was elected as president of the organization). Certain people assumed that the newly-appointed caretaker oil minister Mohammad Ali-Abadi will represent Iran in the meeting but the OPEC Statute has stipulated that only the oil ministers of the member states can participate in the meeting. The newspaper says in fact only oil or energy ministers or a minister whose portfolio is related to energy issues can participate in OPEC meetings. Even if a caretaker oil minister is appointed, he cannot assume the OPEC presidency, therefore Iraq, as deputy OPEC president, would take over as the president of the oil cartel. Majlis Energy Committee Chairman Hamid-Reza Katouzian has called the appointment of Ali-Abadi “the worst choice” for oil and gas industries. Ahmadinejad nominated Ali-Abadi as energy minister for his second cabinet, however, MPs refused to vote for him.

KHORASAN in a news report quotes Majlis Economic Committee Chairman Gholamreza Mesbahi-Moqaddam as saying the implementation of the subsidy reform plan has boosted liquidity. He said if officials do not pay due attention, the cash subsidies will be spent on purchasing Chinese-made substandard goods. The government should draw up a plan to support domestically-made goods, Mesbahi-Moqaddam suggested.

In an interview posted on TABNAK website former Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati says Saudi Arabia should not think that by torturing, imprisoning and killing Bahraini protestors it can stifle the voice of the people. Velayati said Egypt and Tunisia are examples for Saudi Arabia. Did Hosni Mubarak succeed to stamp out uprising in Egypt? he asks. He predicted that sooner or later Saudi troops will leave Bahrain but the Bahraini people will never forget injustice by Saudis. “As a political expert my recommendation to Saudis is that they should think more about their real interests. It is possible to silence people for a while but it is impossible to stifle and silence people for ever. This is the lesson of history in our region,” the foreign policy advisor to the Leader commented.

In a commentary in SHARQ newspaper political analyst Davoud Hermidas Bavand says the way Ali Abdullah Saleh and his family left Yemen shows that the decision was final and shows that Saleh’s political life came to an end. The exit of Saleh from the country – even for medical treatment – will leave a great effect on the political structure of the country. Psychologically, the remaining ruling officials cannot continue to suppress the people and they will be forced to meet the demands of the people. However, guarding the achievements made by the popular uprising in Yemen is quite dependent on the behavior of the elites, the establishment of trust, and restoring national unity and this will not be possible without the involvement of the influential tribal leaders. The writer also says the toppling of the dictatorial system in Yemen will give new energy to people in other Arab countries
